The Weather Kids

Client: UNDP

The Weather Kids campaign, part of UNDP’s efforts to inspire public conversation and mobilise action on climate change, saw the disruption of global television on March 21st, 2024, with shocking weather forecasts from the future broadcast to mobilise climate action today. Informed by insights revealing climate action is more likely when motivated by a greater understanding of the consequences of inaction, notably amongst parents, the strategy centred on the production of a weather forecast for 2050 (based on IPCC data), presented by a child. The segment warns that rising temperatures will bring more of the catastrophic climate change impacts we are already experiencing, with viewers encouraged to sign a pledge to act.

Created in partnership with the Climate Comms Taskforce, World Meteorological Organization and The Weather Channel, the campaign was adapted for and activated in the UK by H&K, the Met Office and markettiers, who also supported global broadcast media relations. This included using the hero video script to produce a UK specific forecast, presented by Jack (see accompanying material) and based on data provided by the Met Office, as well as working with UK based UNDP and Met Office spokespeople. To date, the campaign has received 3000+ mentions in online and print media in 58 countries and has featured on 200+ television channels and radio stations. UK highlights include Sky, ITV, The BBC and 250 radio stations incorporating a dedicated climate news feature created specifically for the campaign.
