Women account for just 6% of all commercial pilots worldwide, and only 7% of pilots in the UK are from BAME (Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic) backgrounds.

In addition, misconceptions about requirements to apply to be a pilot, such as needing 2020 vision or studying a STEM- focused degree, put off potential candidates. To address this imbalance, easyJet has launched programmes such as its Amy Johnson Initiative, doubling the number of female pilots in its ranks, and pilot outreach visits to schools, college and youth groups representing ethnic minorities.
