Changing UK government tax policy to encourage more free housing for Ukrainian refugees

In the first five weeks of the Ukraine/Russia war alone, more than four million refugees from Ukraine crossed borders into neighbouring countries. In response, the UK Government launched the Homes for Ukraine scheme. However, HW Fisher identified an unexpected tax issue for corporate landlords wanting to offer up their properties. As a direct result of our campaign highlighting the issue, landlords who previously faced paying thousands in taxes for offering their homes to Ukrainian refugees free of charge will now have their bills waived by HMRC. More importantly, more properties could become available for those in need.
